At Coffee Roasters Scotland, we are dedicated to providing our customers with the best-tasting coffee, whether it’s a bold espresso, a smooth filter brew, or a rich decaf option. While decaf coffee often gets overlooked, we’re here to change that with our commitment to offering only the highest quality decaffeinated coffee—using the Swiss Water Process, a 100% chemical-free method that retains the flavor and integrity of the beans.
Why Choose Decaf Coffee?
Decaf coffee is the perfect choice for those who love the taste of coffee but want to reduce or eliminate their caffeine intake. Whether it’s for health reasons, reducing jitters, or enjoying a late-night cup without disrupting sleep, decaf can be a great option. However, not all decaf is created equal.
One of the main concerns for coffee drinkers is that decaffeinated coffee can sometimes lack the rich, full flavors of regular coffee. This is often due to how the caffeine is removed from the beans. Some decaf processes use harsh chemicals that can strip away the nuanced flavors of the beans, leaving you with a flat, dull brew.
At Coffee Roasters Scotland, we believe decaf drinkers deserve better, which is why we exclusively use the Swiss Water Process for all of our decaf coffees.
What is the Swiss Water Process?
The Swiss Water Process is an innovative, eco-friendly decaffeination method that relies on water—rather than chemicals—to remove caffeine from the coffee beans. It’s a 100% natural and organic method that preserves the bean’s flavour while eliminating 99.9% of the caffeine.
Here’s how it works:
- Soaking the Beans: Green (unroasted) coffee beans are soaked in pure water to allow the caffeine to dissolve.
- Caffeine Removal: The water, now containing the caffeine molecules, passes through a special carbon filter that traps only the caffeine, while the flavour-rich compounds remain in the water.
- Flavour Preservation: The flavour-saturated water, called Green Coffee Extract (GCE), is then used to remove the caffeine from the next batch of beans without losing any of the beans’ original flavor. The process continues until the beans are 99.9% caffeine-free.
This process is not only chemical-free but also protects the complex flavors of the coffee, resulting in a decaf that tastes just as vibrant and nuanced as regular coffee.
Why We Only Use the Swiss Water Process
At Coffee Roasters Scotland, we are committed to quality and sustainability. Here’s why we’ve chosen the Swiss Water Process for all of our decaf offerings:
- No Chemicals: Unlike other decaffeination methods that use solvents like methylene chloride or ethyl acetate, the Swiss Water Process relies solely on water, ensuring that no chemicals come into contact with the beans. This makes it a healthier and more natural option for our customers.
- Retains Flavour: Because this process focuses on preserving the natural flavors of the coffee beans, the result is a decaf coffee that is full of character, richness, and complexity. You won’t have to compromise on taste when you choose our Swiss Water decaf.
- Eco-Friendly: The Swiss Water Process is environmentally friendly, using only water, and it reduces the environmental impact associated with chemically processed decaf coffee. It’s a choice we feel good about, and we know our customers will too.
- Consistency: The Swiss Water Process ensures consistent results with every batch. You can enjoy a smooth, rich cup of decaf that tastes just as good as any caffeinated coffee from our roastery.
